My 70-year old mother is suffering from a macular degeneration. I learned that it is also referred as an age-related macular degeneration (AMD or ARMD). According to her eye doctor, she has a dry macular degeneration (or called the non-neovascular). When I researched for the word "neovascular", I learned that it is a development of new blood vessels in an improper area. And since my mother is quite old, a dry AMD can result to the thinning of her macular tissues. Unfortunately, her doctor did not provide her a medicine to treat her macular degeneration problem. However, she was advised that eating nutrient-rich foods, which are
rich in Vitamins A, C, and E, may help her to prevent or to slow down the development of her eye problem.
More so, she was advised to wear a UV-protective sunglasses to protect his eyes from the damaging sun rays. And that's what my mother does. As far as I remember, her problem was started when she experienced a sudden but painless vision loss. And most of the times, she can't view an object clearly because of either shadowy effect or distorted vision. These symptoms alarmed us, that's why we let my mother to consult her eyer doctor. With the help of an
Amsler grid, a device used to diagnose the AMD, her optometrist diagnosed the condition of her eyes.
