It's a common scene to see children playing while they giggle and laugh out of their guiltless pleasure. So innocent, yet they can also be rough and reckless. These behaviors make them more prone to accidents. Some just end up in booboos or scabs while other incidents, like the eye trauma, become more tragic than expected. To have impaired and loss of vision is the last thing parents ever wish their child to experience.
I feel sorry for Katie. She's just charming and so sweet. But because of a bicycle accident, she'll never look at the world the same way again. She was riding a bike when a cat passed by. She swerved off the pavement and hit a tree. Katie suffered a serious eye injury and at age 8, she can no longer see, deprived of the amazing wonders of colors and figures. Hearing such a distressing story, I feel like my heart's tearing apart for Katie.
Research says that children who suffer from eye trauma are often engaged in sports actvities like baseball, boxing, and basketball. Other factors that may cause the damage to the eye are chemicals, fingernails, and toys. Any eye injury, especially in kids, should be deemed as a medical emergency. Doctors or specialists need to check kids' eyes before they recommend surgery or other less aggressive courses of medication or treatments for eye trauma.

Remember what Popeye says? "Aye, aye, eat Spinach and your eyes will go clearer!" Well, he's not just bluffing his way to Swee' Pea. Leafy, green vegetables, like spinach, help retain brighter eyesight and also alleviate the cause of certain eye disorders. When our eyes suffer, we need spinach more than ever to survive the computer-generated way of living and shield our sight from daily pollution and stress.

Spinach is made of antioxidants, like zeaxanthin and lutein, proven to defend against AMD or age-related macular degeneration. The older we get, the weaker our eyesight gets; AMD also triggers irreversible blindness. That's why our body requires a high amount of these antioxidant components to promote better vision and enhanced viewing ability. Zeaxanthin and lutein are also found in kale and other food variety.

So why do we need a clear eyesight? Because we don't want to miss out on the world. The greatest gift is the ability to see color, shadows, and figure. If there are versions of tainted reality and smudged biblical beauty, seeing is still the best human experience of all. To see is to believe that the world is created for you and me!

I love bacon and eggs -- nothing can stir me up more than my favorite breakfast meal. My wife, ever so generous, makes sure that I get a daily dose of eggs, so long as I don't wake up in somebody else's bed. When I learned that eggs provide health for my eyes, I said to my wife, "You see, you don't always need to resort to desperate measures. There are gifts in life that can help us steer clear of an eye surgery." From then on, I tried to unravel the secret behind eggs and how they improve eye health.
Tuesday, May 8. 2007
When it comes to eye care, eggs can perform better than leafy vegetables, like broccoli and spinach. A recent study confirmed that our body can absorb zeanxantin and lutein more when these come from eggs. So what do these antioxidants have to do with our eyes? They shield our eyes from UV rays. As a result, they lessen the tendency of having cataract by 20%. Eggs also prevent macular degeneration by 40%. Cataract and macular degeneration are age-related health disorders so you might as well start early in combatting the threat of an eye ailment.
Monday, May 7. 2007
The zeanxanthin and lutein compounds are found in the egg yolk. An egg yolk has 25 µg/100 g of zeaxanthin and 30 µg/100 g of lutein. These compunds nourish our eye health so if you want to do better with your sense of sight, you can have a more lavish egg diet daily. 1.3 egg yolks daily equals 38% more of lutein levels and 128% up on your zeaxanthin level. So what else is there to look for? We all love eggs -- they're yummy, nutritious, and can be mixed with other ingredients. I can imagine how boring meals can be without a garnish of eggs and its delights.

Whenever there's a swelling on your eyelid, people tease you as a peeping tom. They say that stye is a curse for peeking into someone else's private activity. But enough with the superstitious belief. Stye is a common eye infection among kids and adults. Sometimes it can be small but other times, it can swell so bad you'd like to gorge your eyes. But, don't worry there's a right way to treat it.
Saturday, May 5. 2007
Styes can be messy with a pus-filled swelling. It is a common bacterial eye infection and it can also be contagious. What are the causes of hordeolums or stye? It can be the result of blocked and infected glands in your eyelid. Oftentimes, it is contaminated by a dirty finger that touches the eye area. When styes become painful, it is because of meibomian, meaning the gland that allows eyelid lubrication is blocked.
Friday, May 4. 2007
Styes normally just leave you in peace, but to hasten your recovery, a wet and warm compress can do the trick. Applying it on the infected area would help relieve the pain. Consult a doctor once it gets serious. The doctor will prescribe an ointment or an oral antibiotic to stop the spread of infection. Other agressive measure includes making a cut into the stye so the pus may be drained out. Don't take this condition lightly for it may sometimes lead to conjunctivitis or pink eye.

What a cruel world! You already suffer a great deal from an impaired vision, but to add insult to injury, you will have to be taunted as a four-eyed geek. Wearing eye glasses is the fastest way to detect and label a high school nerd. Of course, giddy teenage girls do not wish to be associated with guys from the chess and math clubs. All they want are jack-ass jerks in the football varsity team. But that's how it is really when your young and foolish. Brawn stamps out the brain. They see eyeglasses as a form of fashion suicide.
Wednesday, May 2. 2007
From fashion suicide to fashion accessory. Eyeglasses can make you look pensive and sophisticated. It will turn on the charm of being smart and confident even if your head is a round ball of air and gas. You're eyes will radiate with a glowing passion and character with just the right size and the perfect frame. So make the right choice with frames that will fit and flatter the size of your face. And if you wish to have colored-frames, the number one tip is to blend it with the color of your hair and skin tone. That way, a four-eyed geek will now transform into a matured, eligible bachelor.
Tuesday, May 1. 2007
Choose eyeglass frames opposite to your face shape to reflect personality and style. Geometric or rounded frames are perfect for an oval face. But if your face is oblong, choose a curved or rounded style of frame. It's a trick to emphasize the width of your face. To create a sharp feature, squared or angled frames will do justice to a round face. Yet, for a triangular face shape, pick aviator and geometric styles. For a rectangular face, curved or rounded frames will exude an effect of a wider face. Normally, a square-shaped face needs to tone down the strong feature or facial persona. It can be achieved using rounded, cat-eyed, or oval styled-frames.

Can you imagine a world without colors? I'm not sure if I'll have the same appetite for life when I can't even distinguish the varying shades. You see, life is color. I need to see the blue skies so I can appreciate the splendor overlooking from above. I need to see the red roses so I can be reminded of beauty and grace. I need to see the green fields so I can feel comfortably warm with nature. I also need to see the yellow sunflower, reminding me that hope blossoms everywhere. I need colors in my life or it won't be the same as it used to be. What is seeing if colors won't even mix and match with your senses. I need to see the difference or life will all be the same. All I want is a moving color.
Sunday, April 29. 2007
The world is neither black nor white when you're color blind. You can still see color though shades and degree are not clear for distinction. This failing eye condition is hereditary. Although sometimes it can be also caused by eye diseases, aging, or retina and macula damage. The sad thing is there's no absolute treatment. But there are methods and techniques that can improve the present state of vision. Special glasses may also help you to see through colors, but the condition is irreversible.
Saturday, April 28. 2007
Before you can understand the cause of color blindness, you first need to know the rods and cones of our retina. They help us see things in varying color and degree of brightness. Acting as a photoreceptor, cones differentiates the colors and shades for our eyes. The light sensitive pigments are particular to wavelengths. For short wavelengths, we have the color blue, green for the medium wavelengths, and red for higher wavelengths. You won't be able to distinguish colors if there's a deficiency in the cone. Missing the green and red hues has direct effect to sensitivity to brightness. Hence, it triggers color blindness.

Close your eyes in utter darkness. Imagine your world without lights and color. Any second now, you'll be in a daze of panic. You'll only find comfort as soon as you open your eyes and welcome the dazzling light, vague shadows, and figurers. You'll thank God for the gift of sight and ask no more than you already have. The miracles you've long sought are unfolding right before you, every fleeting second. All we need is to behold the beauty and wonder, and ask no more. Your eyes is your window to the world. You see good and evil, and God's power works in you.

Do you know that the most active muscles in the whole body is the eye? Yes, not your limbs even if you workout regularly in a gym. And the strongest of all muscles are the external muscles of your eye. They exceed past the expectation, 100 times powerful than they need to be. They are devoted and loyal, and work overtime with 100% ability at any moment, any day, any hour. In an instant, your eyes can set in motion hundreds of muscles and organs in the body. Now that's how your eye muscles work out.

Our two eyes have two million parts. Every hour, it can process 36,000 information and for a normal life span, your eyes bring 24 million images around you. Not only that, do you know that your cornea is just the same size as a dime? Cornea is one of the only two tissues which do not need a supply of oxygen from blood. It takes a tenth of second for your eye to blink, and your eye blinks 11,500 times or 4.2 million times in a year. Knowing that your eyes can perform these miracles, I'm sure you will learn to appreciate and take care of them like never before.

Sometimes in our busy lives, we neglect a thing or two about common health regimens. And when the problem is already bulging out, that's the only time that we notice and heed to its warning. Lack of sleep but plenty of stress, they say it's the common cause of eye bags. But will a slice of cucumber take off the puff from your undereye? Not so! It doesn't work all the time. And the scare of an eye bag is not a one-night quick fix for us to have.
Monday, April 23. 2007
Eye bags are caused by a swollen blood vessel. Undereye skin becomes puffy when there is a toxin build-up because of poor lymphatic drainage brought about by stress, fatigue, or illness. Allergies, sinus infection, and colds can also result to nasal congestion, which in turn contributes to the bulge through a blood vessel. As we age, the fatty layer between the cheek bone and the eye becomes thinner, while skin tissue begins to sag because of collagen and elastin deterioration that affects the skin's elasticity and firmness.
Sunday, April 22. 2007
It's better to treat eye bags as early as possible. The eyes are the striking feature on your face and that gives your face its glow, and you need bright eyes to express your joy and aura. There are simple tips you can follow to treat eye bags. For swollen blood vessels, avoid exposure to allergens from pollution and pollen. Sleep well for 7 to 8 hours and limit your alcohol and salty food intake. For thin undereye skin, always use a sunscreen. It's much better if you use a formula that nourishes collagen and elastin rejuvenation. And for undereye dryness, replenish your skin with lots of humectants and emollients. There are beauty products concentrating on these formula, but these compounds are also found in natural shea butter, avocado, sunflower, carrot, and olive oils. Remember those eye tips and take the necessary steps before it swells out of control!

There are rare moments in life when even boys trickle with tears, soldiers do too. Women cherish it as an emotional release while men see it as weakness. But the inevitable fact is that our eyes flood with water when we're dealt with a strong emotion, either joy, fear, or sorrow. My son once asked me if it's true that boys don't cry. I said, "Of course not, everybody does!" "Why do we cry?", said my inquisitive child. I don't know technically how to explain it, but based on my experience, I said that we do cry maybe because our body can no longer contain it, and we have to push it out our eyes. It may be silly but I think it made sense.
Friday, April 20. 2007
Here's a more scientific reason for those tears. Our body reacts to what we feel. They respond to emotions so when we're upset or overjoyed, our brains signal the body to produce more hormones and chemicals. Those extras are then released through tears which contains the hormones and chemicals from our body. We then feel relieved because we're able to rid off the extra chemicals in our body. We purge ourselves off the hormones related to creating powerful emotions. So next time, you may want to cry like a baby. Oh no, don't suck it up! It's a way for your body to communicate with what you feel. By suppressing your emotions, your body may cause a rift in health.

We see so much of evil lurking in the streets of our pathetic society, that sometimes, we just want to shut our eyes from all these horrid sights. We wish that we can no longer see the awful truth, only to realize that we are still fortunate to be gifted with such vision. "Good or bad, at least you can see. For a blind man like me, all I could ever hope for is to see my wife's face, my daughter's smile, and my mother's tears." That's an ultimate dream for Ramon. Unfortunately, darkness will forever crush his vision.
I was stirred by the blind man's sentiments. I realized that even with my nagging complaints, my eyes never ceased to give me the opportunity to see the world with moving color and images. I figured that if there's one thing I can do for my eyes, it is to treat them well and let them wallow in a bright environment.
They say that TV watching can strain your eyes. But don't worry, you don't need to give up this cheap diversion. Just make sure that you have ample room lighting and distance so your eyes can exert the least effort in communicating the pictures to your brain. In fact, TV viewing is only second to reading or sewing when it comes to exhausting the eye. Just remember to adjust the contrast and brightness to your room and limit your viewing hours. This way your eye gets the thrill in watching and a treat for a day so tiring.
